NWHSAA Activity Guidelines - General Information

 

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

1. Students in Grades 9 – 12 inclusive may compete as per SHSAA    Guidelines.

 

2. A student who is eligible for “Junior Activities” in the NWHSAA can     be defined as:

A student who enrolled in grade 7, 8 or 9 in a member school.

Any student who is 16 years of age as of September 1, of the current school year is deemed ineligible.

Students in Grade 6 may be used only if necessary for that member school to be able to field a team. Grade 6 students are therefore not eligible for the following activities.

                  Badminton

                Cross Country

                Golf

        Track and Field

        Wrestling

 

Any school using grade 6 student(s) must complete the “NWHSAA Use of Grade 6 Students” form, and have approval from the NWHSAA President prior to the student(s) participation in any competition.

 

3. Grade 9 students are eligible to compete both as “Junior” and         “Senior” athletes within the NWHSAA.

 

 

START DATES

 

All activities are to follow the official start dates as set by the SHSAA. This applies to both “Junior” and “Senior” activities.

The only activity which has a different start date is “Junior” Basketball.

The start date for Junior Basketball shall be no earlier than 1 week following the NWHSAA district Junior Volleyball Championship.

 

 

JUNIOR LEAGUE PLAY-OFF DATES

 

All League representatives for NWHSAA championships are to be determined a minimum of 1 week prior to the NWHSAA championship.

 

JEWELLERY

 

For the safety of the competitor and their opponents all jewellery must be removed for any SHSAA/NWHSAA interschool athletic event except golf, cross-country, curling, and track and field (except High jump and pole vault). In addition all athletes will be allowed to wear unobtrusive plastic retainers for all sanctioned SHSAA events. 

In volleyball and badminton, piercings shall be removed, taped, or replaced with an obtrusive plastic retainer. 

 

FOOTWEAR

Footwear is strongly recommended in all sports.

WEARING OF HEADGEAR

Headgear shall not be worn by athletes, team members or coaching staffs, or officials during indoor SHSAA/NWHSAA athletic contests, with the exception of curling. Exceptions will be allowed at the discretion of the commissioner for health, safety, and religious reasons only. 

LISTENING DEVICES 

Athletes will not be allowed to wear any listening devices (headsets, earbuds, etc.) during competition for entertainment or instructional purposes except for those that are medically prescribed. 

FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY 

Only SHSAA/NWHSAA host approved media personnel will be allowed near the playing area to take photographs (using flash photography). These individuals may need to be reminded of the necessary precautions. This would include the local media, school yearbook, and other personnel deemed appropriate.
