On Saturday, February 10th, Twin Lakes Community School in Buffalo Narrows hosted the NWHSAA 1A Jr. Boys basketball championships.  Competing was the Ile a La Crosse Huskies, the Maidstone Huskies and the TLCS Eagles.

The first game was between Ile a La Crosse and Buffalo Narrows. This was the third time these two teams had met in a week. The winner would move on to face Maidstone in the final. The game was evenly contested with baskets being traded for much of the first half but Ile a La Crosse pullied ahead to lead by 6 at the half.  With a 10 point run in the 3rd quarter Ile a La Crosse was able to pull ahead with a lead that the Eagles were unable to overcome. Though the Eagles pulled within 8 Ilex’s size and experience was ultimately too much for the much younger and smaller Eagles.

In the championship game Ile a La Crosse squared off against number one seeded Maidstone.  The game got off to a fast start with both teams running and scoring off fast break opportunities.  As the game progressed Maidstone was able to use their quickness to attack the basket and create excellent scoring opportunities gradually opening up a lead. Ile a La Crosse pushed back several times and closed the gap by slowing things down and taking advantage of their size around the basket.  Ultimately though Maidstone’s speed wore down Ile a La Crosse and Maidstone captured the North West District’s Jr. Boys Basketball championships with a convincing win.

Thank-You to the time keepers, Meghan Morin and Faye Larson and to the score keeper McKenzie Schultz for volunteering their time on a Saturday these are both crucial roles that are much appreciated. Thank-You also to referees for supporting basketball in the North West by making the drive from Meadow Lake to Buffalo Narrows.

Congratulations Huskies
