Lloydminster Dominates Play at Junior Badminton Districts

 

Lloydminster Comprehensive High School was the host site for the Northwest High School Athletic Association’s Junior Badminton Districts Playdowns on Saturday April 29th. Lloydminster teams had eight of ten teams medal at the event, while capturing nearly half of the fifteen total medals available to students.

In the boys singles draw, the gold medal match featured Holy Rosary’s Logan Freimark head to head with Jonas Samson’s Blake Fredlund. Fredlund would come out on top by scores of 21-17, 21-17. Freimark advanced to the championship game after defeating Maidstone’s Kaden Gallon 21-12, 21-17 while Fredlund defeated Konnor Hiscock of Neilburg 21-8, 21-14. Gallon would bounce back in the bronze medal game, featuring a battle of Battle River’s by defeating Hiscock 21-14, 11-21, 21-17.

The girls singles draw featured an all Lloydminster match-up with E.S. Laird’s Emily Butz taking on Bishop Lloyd’s Ava McEachern. McEachern would defeat her cross-town rival 21-13, 21-18 to win the gold medal while Butz would capture the silver. McEachern defeated Allisandra Facun from Neilburg 21-12, 21-16 in the semi-finals while Butz would get by Maidstone’s Jenna McFadyen 21-19, 21-18. Facun would capture the bronze medal against McFadyen by defeating her 21-19, 21-19 in a tight 3rd place battle.

The boys doubles final was captured by Goodsoil’s Isaiah Finlay and Jaxon Wagmann. The boys would defeat the tandem of Mason Ward and Chayce Schmidt from Bishop Lloyd in three sets for the gold medal by scores of 21-13, 18-21, 21-14. Ward and Schmidt defeated Scott Leer and Kelton Augustin by scores of 21-10, 21-10 in the semi-finals while Finlay and Wagmann defeated Pierceland’s Alex Gonie and Brodie Gonie 21-14, 21-18 that featured an-all Meadow Lake zone semi-final. The Gonie team would still leave Lloydminster with some medals around their neck, taking out Leer and Augustin 21-17, 22-20 in an exciting bronze medal match.

The girls doubles team of Kaylynn Gauvin and Stefhanie Abu from Bishop Lloyd captured the gold medal, taking out Lashburn’s Emma McLauchlan and Avery Scramstad by scores of 21-9, 21-10. The Bishop Lloyd ladies defeated the Holy Rosary team of Reegin Powell and Zoe Godin in the semi-finals 21-12, 21-14 while McLauchlan and Scramstad defeated Goodsoil’s Samantha Lange and Hannah Hennerbichler 21-18, 21-18 in the semi-finals. Powell and Godin defeated Lange and Hennerbichler 21-14, 21-14 to capture the bronze medal game.

The mixed doubles championship match featured an all Bishop Lloyd final with Ethan MacDuff and Sonnet Gow defeating Dylan Pollard and Kennedy Mutter 21-8, 21-14. MacDuff and Gow reached the final by taking out Glaslyn’s Ryan Durocher and Mykayla Pylypow 21-7, 21-8 while Pollard and Mutter defeated St. Walburg’s Jayden Brown and Shayla Ewanchuk 21-11, 16-21, 21-11 in three sets. Brown and Ewanchuk would take down their Central counterparts from Glaslyn in the bronze medal game 21-10, 21-11.
